Abstract

Summary Arne Tostensen, ‘Norwegian Development Research: Retrospect and Prospect’, Forum for Development Studies, No. 2, 1992, pp. 233–256. This article analyses trends in Norwegian development research since 1975 until today with respect to the number of ongoing projects, institutions and researchers involved, their disciplinary affiliation and geographical orientation. Particular emphasis is put on publication output in the 1980s. Special attention is given to the changes in the policy environment including the formation in 1989 of a National Committee for Development Research (NAU) under the Research Council for Science and the Humantities (NAVF) and the recent reorganisation of the entire research council structure. The role of aid authorities in funding thematic programmes of development research is examined and assessed. A concluding section outlines some of the challenges facing this field of research in the years ahead.
