Abstract

This paper will describe existing use of underground space, future options and the potential for integrating subsurface space into the traditional planning process. The implication of the Swedish Rockstore conferences, starting in the late 70-ties, to the use of underground space for multiple purposes will be discussed.Traditionally, utilisation of underground space is well known in Sweden through a wide range of applications in the past, through projects presently under construction as well as through projects being planned for future needs. This paper will describe how and why the development of underground space has become such an important part of Swedish society. Today, utilisation of underground space is very often considered as an option for infrastructure project. However, there is a potential to integrate this dimension further into early planning.Looking back, the underground development in Sweden has its roots in the mining industry. The long mining tradition was followed by major developments within hydroelectric power and strategic storages for oil and gas during the second half of the 20th century. In the future, planning of subsurface space in urban areas needs to be an integrated part of the planning process. Thus, the professionals in underground business are required to be part of the early planning process, together with city planners and architects.
