Abstract

TCAM (traffic control and monitoring) is a traffic data transmission system specified jointly by the Traffic Control Systems Unit (TCSU) of London and Microsense Systems Ltd. to take advantage of advanced communications and networking techniques. TCAM concept is based on the open systems principals to allow interchangeability, interconnection and interworking of systems and products from different suppliers and thereby also take advantage of technology advances to enable the urban traffic control (UTC) communications infrastructure to evolve with it. The aim of this paper is to review the present day UTC systems in London, the TCAM development and also look at why the TCAM system can be used to demonstrate the implementation of the standards developed under the DETR programme, called the urban traffic management and control systems.
