Abstract

The Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP) is a new test for use by physical and occupational therapists in assessing motor function in infants under the age of 4 months. Initial construct validity of the test is demonstrated by a Rasch psychometric analysis of 112 tests on infants from 32 weeks’ postconceptional age to 3.5 months’ post-term-equivalent age and stratified by medical risk. The internal consistency of elicited items on the test was 0.97, and 61% of the variance in ability on the test was predicted by postconceptional age and medical risk (R=0.79; P < 0.00001). Future research will develop national norms for the TIMP and investigate the concurrent validity for capturing function in an ecologically valid interaction with caregivers.
