Abstract

This paper describes the evolution of the pore structure of a pellet during sintering. Special attention was drawn to the problem of microcrack formation. It is shown, that the crack formation is due to the volume change in the course of reduction. Further on, crack formation is related to the gas exchange behaviour of the pore network. Based on the experimental results an evaporation/condensation mechanism will probably have to be assumed for constriction of channels and flattening of the inner pore faces. Based on these results recommendations for the pellet production are given.
