Abstract
Color television attempts to match technology with the psychophysical properties of vision to provide a product that presents the magic of television to the consuming public. If it were not for flicker fusion and the tristimulus characteristic of the eye, color television as it is known today would not be possible. What has been achieved with the design of the Square-Planar tube is the use of the perimeter of a picture tube screen to alter the perception of form, thereby employing psychophysical properties to produce the illusion of a flat picture. Such a modification of form is necessary to cost effectively meet the thermal and structural requirements of a mass-produced consumer product.
