Abstract
Basic studies have been conducted on stress measurement using magnetostriction features of mild steel under orthogonal magnetic fields. Most studies on the magnetostriction characteristics have been made using a single magnetic field when dealing with biaxial stress fields. An idealized model is proposed that is based on experimental results involving uniaxial tests of a mild steel specimen under orthogonal magnetic fields. The tests have been carried out using an alternating current stress measurement (ACSM) system. The model is thought to explain the changes in induced magnetization with respect to biaxial as well as uniaxial stresses. The paper also presents a method for calculating residual stress from the orthogonal magnetic field model.
