Abstract

An investigation of microsporogenesis in Canna L. revealed that the tapetum is invasive but non-plasmodial. Tapetai cell protoplasts are released as individuals. In the loculus they are at first more or less spherical but can produce amoeboid processes in late stages of microsporogenesis. They do not fuse with one another. Meiosis is normal and cytokinesis is successive. The implications of the novel type of tapetum are discussed.
