Abstract

The development of a practical superconducting generator has been carried out in Japan since 1988. The authors have developed a rotor with a highly stabilized superconducting field winding and a stator with an air gap winding composed of double transposed copper coils. A series of tests was completed at the end of 1997. The output of 78.8 MW was recorded, which was the highest value obtained to date worldwide. The development of the generator and the test results are described.
