Abstract

Summary Multi‐unit dwellings, in particular home units, emerged over the past decade as a major element of the housing stock in resort settlements on the New South Wales north coast. A high proportion of units are owned by people who normally live elsewhere. Units serve purposes for their buyers which both parallel and contrast with those served by more traditional, detached holiday houses. Using building statistics and valuation records, the paper outlines the evolution of the unit stock. Unit owners’ purchase motives, travel times, frequency of use, choice of units and locations and the interconnections between these factors are then considered. Comparisons are made with earlier survey data on owners of detached holiday houses.
