Abstract

The area of social work in Cyprus is relatively new and under-researched. Although historically there is some evidence of how it has contributed to Cypriot society, the profession of social work has been criticised and debated by the public. The aim of this chapter is to explore and examine the development of Cypriot social work practice and education. In particular, the chapter attempts to present the historical evolution of social work in relation to the socioeconomic, cultural and political context. Moreover, it explores the Cypriot welfare state and the main work areas of social work. Finally, the chapter will critically evaluate the current model of social work education and present a critical analysis of its recent developments.
