Abstract

This paper describes the development of a prototype of light passenger quarter car for improved vehicle ride characteristics. A prototype of 2 degree-of-freedom (DOF) quarter passenger car passive suspension system and hydraulic assisted quarter car active suspension system (HA-QCSS) is designed and developed with an objective to analyse vehicle ride characteristics. The vehicle ride characteristic of 2 degree-of-freedom (DOF) prototype is investigated using MATLAB environment (Math Works, Inc., USA) and experimental analysis. The physical model of passive quarter car consist of sprung mass, unsprung mass, spring, damper and a tyre spring. A hydraulic actuator has been selected for active damping in active suspension system because of its high power-to-weight ratio. Thus the passive model is modified to a 2 DOF HA-QCSS by placing a hydraulic actuator in between sprung and unsprung masses with necessary instrumentation. The results show considerable improvement in vehicle ride characteristics over the conventional passive system. The details of the test set-ups development for the passive and hydraulic assisted quarter car active suspension system (HA-QCSS), MATLAB analysis and experimental analysis results are presented.
