Abstract

This paper aims to present formation and development of print media in Japan, as well as influence of wider circumstances on development of journalism. It will show the situation in today's press and its prevalence and most important characteristics. Author will show how social settings led to formation of first newspapers in Japan and which social, political and economical events led to major changes in publishing area, media editing, press distribution and press consummation. One needs to analyze polity, most important industrial moments and their consequences, as well as wider educational background. It is very important to look into data of research conducted to reveal Japanese citizen's reading habits and numbers showing press prevalence and social structure in which Japanese press developed. Japanese society is very specific ambience for papers development and therefore press had some specificities in its historical development which were caused by political, economical, industrial and cultural characteristics of state of Japan. Having numerous censorship periods, periods of very specific association in press clubs, Japanese press managed to find successful way to survive on media market, bringing huge number of copies, very developed circulation and big and dedicated reading audience. Main goal of this paper is to prove that number of copies and very big reading of daily newspapers is directly related with political and cultural elements (eg. state encouragement for reading and buying newspapers) and clear state determination to work constantly on raising number of educated citizens.
