Abstract

Recent Australian developments in the application of nuclear techniques to the on-line analysis of coal are reviewed. These techniques include on-line determination of ash in coal using dual-energy γ-ray transmission, pair production and natural γ-ray techniques; in-stream analysis of coal slurries using neutron and γ-ray techniques; on-belt determination of moisture in coke using fast-neutron and γ-ray transmission; and the analysis of unburnt carbon in fly ash using neutron inelastic-scatter γ-rays. The use of these techniques permits the improved control of industrial processes with consequent large economic benefits.
