Abstract

As the fundamental research on the development of micro- electric machines, simulation and experimental study on influence of the twist angle on liquid crystalline backflows between two parallel plates has been achieved using the Leslie-Ericksen theory. The twist angle affects both the direction and the magnitude of the backflow, and the mechanism of the backflow can be also explained through changing the twist angle. The simulation result is in excellent agreement with the experimental result. The study shows that micro- electric machines driven by liquid crystalline backflow can be realized.
