Abstract

ABSTRACT Genetic elimination of Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (KTI) from vegetable soybean (VSB) (Glycine max L. Merrill.) is important as inactivation of this anti-nutritional factor requires 15–20 min. boiling. The F2 plants carrying the null allele of KTI were identified using gene-specific markers in two populations generated by crossing two (VSB) genotypes with a null KTI grain-type genotype. Deployment of gene-specific and Ti-linked simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers led to identification of homozygous recessive (titi) lines in the F6 generation. Across both populations, 21 F6 KTI free lines exhibiting 100-fresh seed weight >45 g, sucrose content >7%, and morphologically similar to VSB were selected. Moisture content and pod yield, at R6, selected lines were 64–74.1% and 7.0−9.5 t∙ha−1, respectively. This is the first report on development of KTI-free VSB which may be suitable for direct consumption.
