Abstract

Cu-8 (by %at) Cr-4 (by %at) Nb alloy with high strength and high thermal conductivity have received a lot of attention over the last decades due to promising role in space application of rocket combustion chamber of reusable launch vehicle. In the present work, the copper alloy synthesize in induction furnace by in situ reduction of Nb2O5 by aluminothermic process in presence of Cr in the premelted copper. The resultant cast product was characterised for hardness, optical, SEM, EDS and XRD analysis. It is possible to synthesise copper alloy with reproducible microstructures and an average hardness of 134 VHN. The precipitates of Cr2Nb showed moderate distribution in and around the grain boundaries of copper with precipitates size varying from 0.7 to 2.5 μm.
