Abstract

AbstractTool wear monitoring plays a significant role for proper planning and control of machining parameters to maintain the product quality. This is because a damage drill bit will affect the quality of the surface to be poor as well as the imperfection of roundness after drilling process. Therefore, this present study here is to develop image-based drill bit wear detection system by using the visual inspection system for drilling application. In addition, this system was developed to detect and analyze the tool wear using image processing approach and the lifespan of the cutting tool is determine by using statistical approach. The profile for the cutting edge of the drill bit was captured using the USB digital microscope. The image obtain was transferred to the Matlab software in order to obtain the information from the image by using the edge detection technique to give the results of white percentage. From there, the statistical and trend will be obtained in order to determine the lifespan of the drill bit. From the results obtain, it shows that the 10 mm drill bit starts to achieve 100% of tool wear after finished drilling 40 number of holes. In contrast, the highest number of holes produced was 70 for 6 mm drill bit and 55 number of holes for 7 mm drill bit before it achieves 100% of tool wear. The results show that the higher the diameter of the drill bit will reduce the life cycle of the cutting tool maybe due to several factors when the machining process starts.KeywordsTool wearVisual inspectionImage processingDrill bit life cycle
