Abstract
A non-platinum carbon based composite catalyst (CCC) with active catalytic sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is used as a catalyst support to synthesize a hybrid cathode catalyst (HCC), thus combining the contributions of active sites from the CCC support and Pt-alloy catalyst. The performance in rotating ring disc electrode (RRDE) and fuel cell showed significant improvement for the HCC when compared to a pure Pt/C catalyst. The Pt2Ni/CCC catalyst exhibited a current density of 1.5 mA cm-2 and mass activity of 0.441 A mgPt-1 at 0.9 ViR-free in RRDE and fuel cell, respectively. Under H2-air fuel cell conditions when using cathodic stoic flow of 2.0, a current of 1.4 A cm-2 was observed at 0.58 ViR-free.
