Abstract

The present study focused on developing the high strength and corrosion resistant magnesium-based composites for temporary implant applications. For this, hydroxyapatite (HA)-silver (Ag) coated Mg-Zn-Dy alloy is subjected to friction stir processing to develop surface composite (F-HAg). The developed surface composite exhibited good mechanical properties and higher corrosion resistance, which was attributed to the significant grain refinement, strong basal structure and presence of high fraction of high angle grain boundaries. Indeed, the results of this study indicate that the fabricated surface composite is a potential material for bioabsorbable implant applications.
