Abstract

In this paper we describe the recently developed fiber optic (FO) acoustic emission (AE) sensors for NDE systems. FO sensors potentially offer much smaller size, reduced weight, the ability to operate at elevated temperatures, immunity to electromagnetic interference, resistance in corrosive environments, and the ability to multiplex multiple sensors on a single fiber. The response of the fiber optic AE sensors were also compared to conventional PZT AE sensors using standard pencil lead break tests. The results indicate that fiber optic AE sensors may provide sufficient sensitivity for some AE applications.
