Abstract
This paper discusses the development and application of a new regression equation for the bow freeboard which consists of the various parameters indicating the ship's principal particulars and the hull form features. The response characteristics of relative bow motion are obtained for 67 existing ships in regular waves, based on strip theory. Using these response characteristics of the 67 ships, a regression equation is introduced to express the magnitude of the relative bow motion in irregular waves. Using the regression equation, the relation between bow freeboard and deck wetness probability can be easily derived under any given sea conditions. This method is used for assessment of the current formula of the 1966 Load Line Convention and the Chinese formula recently proposed at SLF/IMO.
