Abstract

We report that an electrochemical sensor to detect blister agents such as mustard gas (HD) using the carbon electrode modified with gold nanoparticles. Carbon fiber or carbon paper electrode modified with Au nanoparticles showed relatively high sensitivity for HD and the sensitivity of the sensor depended on the kind of carbon materials, the amount of modified gold, and the electrode potential. The linear relationship of the current vs. [HD] was obtained with the range from 1 to 9.6 mg m-3 of HD. By using the sensor prepared in this study, we can detect 1.5 mg m-3 of [HD], which is required concentration for a mobile gas sensor.
