Abstract

The dorsal ocelli of adult Trichoplusia ni develop during the pupal stage from larval primordia. The ocellus arises from epidermal cells and is detectable in day 1 pupae. The ocellar corneagen cells and retinula cells have differentiated by day 2. By day 4 the retinula cell axons have entered the protocerebrum and large or ocellar interneurons are visible. The ocellus and interneurons assume the appearance of those in the adult by day 5, 2 days before adult emergence.
