Abstract

We propose novel bitumen powders for road pavement and the associated processing that can be considered as real breakthroughs that will strongly reformat the whole industrial process as it allows transport of bitumen at ambient temperature and over much longer distances than nowadays bitumen. For the first time the combination of Pickering-based emulsion and sol-gel process has succeeded in the generation of powdered bitumen. The bitumen powder, being easily dispersible, triggers both easier transport and flow at ambient temperature. This novel material, when employed as aggregates binder, allows releasing the bitumen while keeping its stone covering and binding efficiency. Herein we expose the challenges to be overcome and the proposed synthetic strategy. We describe the whole powder elaboration procedure at the laboratory scale and examine the powdered bitumen properties. Finally we discuss the possibility to scale-up this process.
