Abstract
Summary The integration of quarantine, contingency planning and forest health surveillance is seen as the major strength of forest insect and disease protection in New Zealand. A Forest Disease Contingency Plan, the most recent addition to the forest protection system, facilitates rapid and considered response to new pest and disease outbreaks without compromising the quality of decision making. Its recent use against the leaf blister sawfly, Phylacteophaga froggatti, well illustrates the benefits of such a plan.
