Abstract

Research on the development of animal signals has been immensely influential on how we think about human speech and language development. Development of communication skills can be parsed into components of production, usage, and comprehension that may each have different developmental processes. Within a species different developmental processes may apply to different functional signals as well as to different components. In general, the greatest plasticity is found in development of comprehension and the least plasticity in signal production. More mobile species appear to have greater plasticity. Development of communication can be facilitated through subtle social cues or mere associational processes independent of more traditional rewards.
