Abstract A new coil transportation control system has been developed for the cold strip mill at Wakayama steel works, which has reduced the coil transportation work force by 49%. The function of automatic control of coil transfer vehicles has become indispensable in real operations and is used 24 hours a day. The expert system and simulation techniques used in this function have doubled software productivity compared to common programming methods used in its transportation control, and within only two weeks of its startup, this automatic control mode achieved a coil transportation control rate of 98%.
