Abstract

In the present work, a novel sensor structure based on hybrid nanocomposite of tin oxide (SnO2) and cadmium sulphide (CdS) has been fabricated for trace level nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas detection. CdS-SnO2 nanocomposite thin films derived from an optimized 3% concentration of CdS nanoparticles (NPs) infused colloidal solution of SnO2. For 10 ppm NO2 gas concentration CdS-SnO2 nanocomposite thin film based sensor structures exhibited a high sensing response of 2.8 × 103 together with quick response (16 s) and fast recovery time (29 s) respectively, at 90 °C. Sensing mechanism of enhanced NO2 sensitivity obtained in case of CdS-SnO2 nanocomposite thin films is explained in detail.
