Abstract

The Electronic Navigation Research Institute is now developing an integrated air traffic control (ATC) simulation facility using virtual reality technology. The facility currently has an ATC tower simulator and a flight simulator which are connected to each other. The flight simulator pilot operates his aircraft based on instructions from the air traffic controller who is participating in the ATC tower simulation, and the controller in turn conducts his activities while watching moving images of the aircraft As of 1997, the ATC tower simulator's visual system, consisting of a 360-degree screen with a 15-meter diameter and eight projectors, is the biggest virtual reality simulation system in Japan. This facility is expected to aid in areas such as: (1) the development of instruments used by controllers, (2) the development of ATC methods that enable efficient ATC operation, (3) research communication between air and ground by voice and data-link, and (4) research from various viewpoints on airports yet to be built.
