Abstract
The relative advantages of on-display and off-display touch input devices are discussed, and there is a description of the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment's Touchpad as exemplifying the latter. Three experiments are briefly described, comparing user performance with the Touchpad, an on-display touch input device, and a rolling ball. The Touchpad compares favourably with the other two devices, except at very high levels of resolution, where the rolling ball is superior in terms of accuracy.
