Abstract
The use of interactive video as a training tool may be viewed as the state-of-the-art in the evolution of laser safety training programs. Previous training formats that will be reviewed include classroom, audio-visual modules, computer-assisted techniques. Obviously, each of these techniques has strengths and limitations, some of which are universal, and others unique.Combining many of the strengths of these techniques led to the choice of interactive video training. This technique allows the user to interact with a high-quality video display, at his or her own pace. The program has a modular format that allows the laser safety officer (LSO) to tailor the course structure to the needs of the student. The first few modules provide an introduction and instruction on the fundamentals of laser safety for low, medium and high power lasers. Additional modules provide lessons pertaining to laser safety for the specific work environments: manufacturing, laboratory, and service. Also included is a module addressing the unique environment of the installation and servicing of optical fiber communication systems utilizing lasers. The use of interactive video as a training tool may be viewed as the state-of-the-art in the evolution of laser safety training programs.
