Abstract

An innovative technology that includes the production, deoxidation, and refining of steel in a single piece of equipment instead of two expensive units – an ultrahigh-power electric-arc steelmaking furnace and a secondary steel-treatment unit – has been invented. The technology was developed based on results from studies of carbonization and decarbonization in a steelmaking (open-hearth) bath and experience in the ladle treatment of steel with nitrogen and slag-forming reagents injected through the discharge opening of the slide gate. The bath carbonization and decarbonization took place while natural gas and compressed air were injected deep into the metal through the furnace’s tap hole.
