Abstract

SEM, light — and episcopic microscopy was used to investigate the phenomenological behaviour of a human bone marrow cells cultured on sintered hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics. The human bone marrow cells were harvested by a femoral osteotomy at hip arthroplasty operation. The cells were seeded on surface treated and untreated porous dense HA ceramics (OSPROVITR). The cell culture was stimulated by addition of growth factors, namely Interleukin 3 (IL 3) and Granulocyte — Monocyte — Colonisation — Stimulating — Factor (GMCSF) over two to four weeks. The cells attached and adhered onto the HA surfaces, proliferated and segregated extracellular matrix (SEM). No signs of toxicity appeared.
