Abstract

Abstract The Emotionality and Suicidal Tendency Scale (ESTS) was a scale designed to assess the emotional states and suicidal tendency of the remand population in prison settings. A total of 1655 remands of Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre were randomly selected to participate in the present study. The ESTS was found to have a high degree of test-re-test reliability and internal consistency. The subscales showed significant discriminant power in differentiating the high and low risk groups which were classified according to clinical judgement and other self-administered measures of suicidal tendency. The relationship between the subscales and Beck's Hopelessness Scale was discussed.
