Abstract

Purpose: Knee osteoarthritis (kOA) which has long been regarded as a wear and tear disease of articular cartilage is nowadays considered a whole-joint-disease with multifactorial etiology. In the past years, chronic synovitis has been identified to significantly contribute to kOA progression, aggravating detrimental cellular crosstalk between fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) and chondrocytes due to a constant pro-inflammatory and tissue degrading tissue environment. Given the still unmet need for reliable in vitro disease models of OA, this study aims to establish an authentic human 3D biochip model of synovial joint tissue.
