Abstract

A system that automatically adjusts the timing of headway distance warnings in accordance with the driver's alertness level was developed. For the establishment of timing settings, bench tests were performed to verify the relationship between alertness levels and reaction times, then vehicle tests were performed to establish the maximum and minimum values for free running time (the time between the moment when the driver realizes that deceleration is necessary and the moment when the vehicle begins to decelerate). The system minimizes unnecessary warnings without preventing necessary warnings. It can be expected to increase acceptance among drivers.
