Abstract

The present study attempted to evaluate existing vocabulary analysis programs and to develop a Korea Basic English Word Family List (KBEWFL) for updating the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KlCE) vocabulary analysis program. With the two purposes, the three existing analysis programs WordLister 2002, NLPTools and WordLister 2007 were examined. The analysis showed that it is necessary to develop a valid word family list based on the Korea Basic English Word List (KBEWU for improving the programs mentioned above. For this, the derivational regulations of the KBEWL were refined because the regulations were too abstract to be applied to all the words of the KBEWL. The developed KBEWFL was embedded in the KICE word analysis program for analyzing and authorizing English textbooks. In addition, the KBEWFL was uploaded onto the RANGE Program (Heatley, Nation, & Cox head, 2002) and also downloadable at http://cafe.daum.net/sdhera for academic uses. The article concludes with an emphasis on the importance of the need for amending the KBEWL by setting up more valid criteria. (67)
