Abstract

. Psychologists in Australia have not been closely involved in clinical work with older adults until very recently. There has been speculation that one reason for the present state is that training standards have not provided psychologists with adequate information about ageing processes and methods that can assist older people. This article describes the development of the geropsychology program at Edith Cowan University and some of the difficulties involved in that process since its introduction in 1996. The program has now achieved a degree of stability and recognition through accreditation with the Australian Psychological Society as a specialty of the clinical training course. Students who have completed the course are now working in a variety of settings and are able to demonstrate the utility of psychologists trained to have a broad perspective on the problems and strengths of older Australians.
