Abstract

Maximization of safety in bariatric surgery is a critical priority. The National Patient Safety Agency has advocated multidisciplinary, collaborative, and strategic initiatives for safer surgery. Team briefings facilitate transfer of important information and checklists reduce errors due to memory recall. Both processes form a part of a standard operating procedure (SOP) approach that has been effectively used by the airline industry to maximize predictability and minimize the risk of harmful error.
