Abstract

The linear oscillatory actuator (LOA) has very few components and a highly simplified structure, and therefore promises to be simpler and more reliable than present actuators. The authors have developed a compact, high-output single-winding LOA with a design based on magnetic field analysis, for intended application in fully implanted artificial hearts. An LOA that provides high power output, includes a permanent magnet moving rod, and has a simple structure has been developed. After making and testing a prototype LOA, the authors found that the LOA's static thrust characteristics achieved the values intended in the design. They also determined, at the laboratory level, that the LOA's frequency characteristics show that the LOA can attain the required frequencies.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
