Abstract

In this study, we present the development of a phoswich detector system employing a Bismuth Germanate (BGO) crystal scintillator in combination with a Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) film plastic scintillator. Phoswich detectors can contribute to various applications, including radiation monitoring, medical imaging, and nuclear physics experiments, due to their ability to discriminate between different types of radiation. The thin PEN film is sensitive to α and β radiation, while the BGO scintillator exhibits good γ radiation detection efficiency. The incident radiation type and its energy can be determined by analyzing the difference in decay times between these two scintillators. This paper presents an analysis of the detector’s response to α, β, and γ radiation, and the particle tagging efficiencies are to be over 99.9%, 92%, and 99.8%, respectively.
