Abstract

This paper presents our latest effort to enhance the efficiency of CNC machining, through a motion planning with a new velocity profile generation. In traditional motion planning, s- or T- curve velocity profile is generally utilized in the design of successive movements, and the next movement starts only after the current movement stops. In this paper, a new velocity profile with an improved s-curve is proposed for the motion planning, by which the next movement starts without waiting for the stop of the previous movement. As a result, the operation time is saved and the efficiency is improved. Two methods with jerk control and without jerk control are developed to generate this new velocity profile. The significance of the new approach lies in reduction of the operation time without degrading the motion accuracy. Experiments are performed on a CNC machine to verify effectiveness of the proposed approach.
