Abstract

A new manipulator for the existing laser blow-off system, being applied for impurity transport studies, was designed and is installed at Wendelstein 7-X stellarator. The proper choice of suitable materials in combination with a sophisticated, ultra compact structure that takes into account restrictive boundary conditions was an important development step for the whole design. In particular, the limited space, the resistance to thermal loads and vacuum forces, and the influence on and of the magnetic field had to be taken into account. In addition, the design had to consider that the entire system has to be assembled/disassembled quickly in one piece. With all these challenges in mind, a design for the entire diagnostic system was created, built accordingly, successfully tested and operated in the current campaign.
