Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was the development and initial validation of a new marital assessment instrument for use with individuals age 50 and over (the Marriage Problems Scale-50+). Subjects' responses to an interview and several existing marital assessment instruments were used to construct an initial pool of 94 items for the MPS-50+. This version of the MPS-50+ was administered to subjects in a second round of data collection and was then shortened and refined via principal components factor analysis, yielding a 50-item scale. The final version of the MPS-50+ is presented, along with data supporting the reliability and validity of this new scale.
