Abstract

Filament-wound reinforced composite components present a viable alternative to conventional metals. The manufacturing methodology is well established and current emphasis is towards process automation for mass production. This paper describes the development of a low-cost prototype filament winding system for the production of composite components, the work having involved the design of a prototype filament winding system and its related hardware control interface, and the software logic for the 3-D simulation of the winding process of cylindrical and “venturi-shaped” composite components. The paper goes on to discuss some of the production problems encountered. Preliminary tests have found that the system offers users: a greater insight into winding characterisation; process flexibility; shorter processing time; and overlay of more consistent pattern, hence reducing material wastage.
