Abstract
The Collaborative Program on European Marginal Areas—Remote Sensing in Land Use Planning and Environmental Protection is a network of European laboratories and institutes, led and managed by the Joint Research Center. The network is presently organized into five main themes. The general program objectives are to develop and define remote sensing related tools and methods by means of which rural, less favored, areas and marginal land can be identified, classified, and mapped in a quantitative way in order to protect the environment and stimulate development of such areas. At the same time the program seeks to analyze and develop fields where remote sensing can supply new and constructive insight into environmental processes. Within the frame of theme 5, the Department of Physics, University College Dublin, has developed software packages PC_IMega and IM-X, which are especially geared towards applications where facilities are almost lacking or at a premium, and for training, too. The hardware requirements are small. The software runs on almost any PC with a standard EGA- or VGA-board with corresponding color monitor. The software supports a variety of printers and is easily interfaced to plotters and digitizers as well.
