Abstract

A new type of high sensitivity counter employing a liquid scintillation cell as a coincidence gate for a 3″ NaI(Tl) well crystal has been developed for the detection of small amounts of X-γ emitting nuclides. This counter has approximately 10 times the efficiency of a comparable detector employing a conventional gas proportional counter as the coincidence gate. The background of the existing system under the full width at half maximum of the 54Mn photopeak is 0.02 cpm. Measurements to the 15% precision level of as little as 0.25 dpm of 54Mn in lunar rock samples are reported. The applicability of the counter to X-γ emitters other than 54Mn is discussed.
