Abstract

Research and development in radio frequency identification (RFID) and flexible displays is being actively conducted worldwide, which are produced using the roll-to-roll (R2R) system, known as “web processing”, on rolls of flexible plastic. To improve R2R performance and productivity, effective control and online supervision of web quality is needed. In this report, we present a system that independently generates and analyzes wrinkles. Wrinkles are defects caused by compressive stresses developed in the web. A machine vision system is able to capture an image that is generated through a well-defined line or shape from a laser beam passing through a transparent web. Based on the captured images, measurement software calculates three-dimensional (3D) information, including the height of the wrinkle on the web, and displays the images to show the shape of the web in real time. By using an area scan camera and machine vision laser, the proposed system may be set up easily and at low cost to inspect certain types of wrinkles.
