Abstract

Power quality issues have become more important due to the proliferation of microcomputer-based systems that are sensitive to power disturbances. The loads in customer premises have also been the source of power quality problems. It has become important for the utilities to understand the causes for power quality problems and find ways to avoid them. The fuzzy expert system is an effort to understand power quality problems encountered in distribution systems in a better way. A fuzzy expert system combines the usefulness of fuzzy logic in interpreting the fuzzy inputs for the expert system shell and the expert system shell works upon the fuzzy inputs based upon various rules written into the shell. The fuzzy expert system can be used in a utility for personnel training and customer education.
